Next weekend the track at Unaka High School will be filled with the sleek lines of cars, trucks, and motorcycles as the school hosts the inaugural Crusin’ on the Creek fundraiser.

Cruisin’ on the Creek will be held on Saturday, Oct. 14, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the track surrounding the football field in front of Unaka High School. The event will feature a car show, model car contest, swap meet, and concessions. Unaka High School is located just off of Highway 91 in Stoney Creek.

The Unaka High School Career and Technical Education (CTE) classes are teaming up to put on the event.

“We usually have to do one or two fundraisers each,” said Dr. Melissa Loveless, the business technology teacher and CTE principal at UHS. “We decided to do this as a joint effort.”

Students in the CTE courses, such as business, health occupations, collision repair, and family and career community leaders get the chance to compete at the regional and state level to test their knowledge and skills in their field.

While the school system provides funding for the competitions, Loveless said there are often costs associated with the trips that aren’t covered. The CTE classes and students host fundraisers to make up the difference.

When the school’s CTE instructors began brainstorming on a fundraiser they could collaborate on they settled on the idea of hosting launching Cruisin’ on the Creek.

“Mr. (Scotty) Johnson was the one who brought it up,” Loveless said. “He asked how I thought it would do and I said I guess we won’t know until we try it.”

Johnson teaches the collision repair program at Unaka High and also races cars on the side, Loveless said.

Admission to the Crusin’ on the Creek is $2 per person.

For the car show contest portion of the event, those wishing to enter a car, truck, race car, or motorcycle need to be at the school and have their car registered by Noon, which is when judging will be held. The entry fee is $10 per vehicle and each entry will receive free admission for two people. A plaque will be awarded for first place in each division while second and third place winners will receive a certificate.

The entry fee for those wishing to take part in the model car contest is $5.

For those wishing to take part in the swap meet, the vendor fee is $20 and they must provide their own tables or displays. Vendors can sign up the morning of the event.

Concessions will be available for purchase, including kettle corn, deep fried Oreos, shaved ice, funnel cakes, drinks, and doughnuts.
