Tigers roar past Happy Valley

It seems nothing went Happy Valley’s way Friday night as it visited Meigs County for round two of the TSSAA Class AA Playoffs.
Turnovers and penalties paved the way for the Tigers (12-0) to picked up a 38-6 win over the Warriors (8-4). The loss brings an end to the Warriors season while the Tigers continue to vie for a state title, hosting Rockwood (9-3) this Friday for a quarterfinals showdown.
The teams swapped touchdowns early as Meigs County quarterback and Mr. Football finalist, Aaron Swafford rushed in a 19-yarder before Happy Valley quarterback Brayden Sams plunged in from the 1-yard line to tie things up at 6-6 with 7:43 left in the first quarter.
The Tigers scored again in the first quarter as Swafford connected with teammate Austin Judd on a 28-yard touchdowns pass. The Warriors stopped the Tigers on the 2-point conversion and Meigs County took a 12-6 lead with 3:17 left in the opening quarter.
On their own 18, the Warriors faced a long fourth-and-19 after both a false start and unsportsman-like call against HV. With Happy Valley’s Michael Harrah back to punt, the snap went high over his head into the end zone before Harrah booted the ball out of the back of the end zone to stop the Tigers from getting a touchdown. The play resulted in a safety giving the Tigers a 14-6 lead with less than a minute left in the first.
Meigs posted two scores in the second quarter, the first score bringing a lot of frustration out of the Happy Valley sideline and cheering section. The Tigers started at the Warriors 43 before a roughing-the-passer call and an unsportsman-like penalty against Happy Valley head coach Jason Jarrett moved Meigs County on down to the 13 before Swafford hit teammate Jackson Fritts on a 6-yard touchdown pass, moving the Tigers out ahead 20-6.
The Tigers finished out the first half scoring as Swafford ran in a 2-yarder. A fumble and an interception by Happy Valley, would slow the Warriors momentum in the second quarter as the Tigers held a 26-6 lead heading into the half.
With 7:43 left in the third, Swafford extended the Tigers’ lead to 32-6 with a 3-yard run before the Tigers Martin Smith scored on a 90-yard run in the fourth.
The Warriors aggravation over what they felt were bad calls from the officiating team came to a head in the fourth as both a Warriors player and coach Jarrett were ejected from the game for getting their second unsportsman-like calls on the night. A Warriors fan would also be removed from the game.
For Happy Valley, Dakota Cochran had 105 yards rushing on 22 carries. Warriors Will Tittle had 50 yards rushing on 3 carries.
Swafford finished the night with 91 yards rushing, 71 yards passing and 5 touchdowns.
