Prep Hoops Roundup: Highlanders sweep North in conference matchups

Friday night, the Cloudland Lady Highlanders rolled past Sullivan North for a conference win, 61-27.
Cloudland’s Trinity Vines led the way with 13 points while teammates Stacia Wilson and Megan Lunsford had 10 and 9 points, respectively.
The Lady Highlanders jumped out to a 14-10 lead after one as Vines posted seven points in the period. Wilson chipped in with three during the opening period.
Wilson and Vines each had four points apiece in the second quarter as the Lady Highlanders worked out to a 31-17 lead heading into the half. Cloudland’s Kenzie Birchfield had a 3-pointer in the second quarter to help the Lady Highlanders’ cause.
Cloudland scooted on out to a 51-23 lead after three quarters. In the third, Lady Highlander Megan Lunsford came alive for seven points while teammate Jasmine Birchfield posted six in the quarter.
The fourth quarter saw Cloudland’s Gracie Freeman post four points as Cloudland outscored North 10-4.
Birchfield would finish the game with eight points for the Lady Highlanders.
In the boys’ contest, the Highlanders had three players score in the double-digits as Cloudland topped Sullivan North 71-54.
Cloudland’s Robert Leeper posted 19 while Highlanders Hunter Shell tallied 18. Highlander Josh Blair posted 14 points.
After one, the Highlanders held a 21-11 lead as Shell connected for six points and Blair posted five in the period.
Cloudland outscored North in the second quarter 21-13 to take a 42-24. lead into the half. The second quarter saw Shell and Blair both contribute six points each with Blair knocking down a couple 3-pointers.
North found enough momentum for a 16-11 quarter cutting into Cloudland’s lead 53-40. In the fourth, the Highlanders, behind eight points from Leeper, outscored North 18-14 to pick up the win.
Saturday night, the Highlanders hosted Avery County for their home opener.
Cloudland dropped two as the Lady Highlanders fell 59-49, while the Highlanders loss 55-49.
David Crockett at Elizabethton, Saturday, Dec. 16
The Elizabethton Cyclones host David Crockett to John Treadway Gym Saturday night for some nonconference action.
The Lady Cyclones were able to sneak in a 58-53 over the Lady Pioneers giving Elizabethton interim head coach Lucas Andrews his first win with the program.
The Lady Cyclones held a 17-10 advantage after one, before the Lady Pioneers fought to bring the game to a 27-27 tie at the half.
Elizabethton Camryn Koroma led the Lady Cyclones with 12 points while teammates Kaitlyn Light, Morgan Headrick, and Kaylen Shell posted ten points each.
The Elizabethton boys basketball team didn’t fare as well as they dropped their contest with Crockett 62-47. For Elizabethton, Adam Cornett had 13 points. EHS’s Eric Wilson picked nine, while teammate Nico Ashley posted seven.
Hampton at Virginia High Tournament
The Hampton Bulldogs made a trip to Bristol to compete in a tournament at Virginia High over the weekend.
While there, the Bulldogs went 1-2, winning 76-74 over Rye Cove and falling to John Battle and University High, 54-48 and 96-87 (double overtime), respectively.
The Bulldogs were 4-3 on the season before Monday’s night conference contest at Unaka.
