Johnny Mack Chambers

Johnny Mack Chambers, 75, of Elizabethton, went home to be with the Lord, peacefully in his sleep, on Sunday, January 7, 2018, at the Select Specialty Hospital. Mr. Chambers was born in Johnson City and was the son of the late James and Phina Bowman Chambers. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 23 years, Dixie Hardin Chambers, and a brother, Keith Chambers.
Mr. Chambers was a veteran of the United States Army and actively served in the Vietnam War. He was also retired from the Tennessee National Guard and was a member of the 776th Maintenance Company and served during Desert Storm. He had a total of 33 years in service to his country.
He was a devoted father and husband and was lovingly known as “Papaw Pig.” He loved to farm and loved his church, Valley Forge House of Prayer, where he was a member.
Those left to cherish his memory include three sons, Johnny Hicks and his wife, Shay, Elizabethton, Ed McNeil and his wife, Angie, Hampton, and Thomas McNeil and his wife, Cathryn, Elizabethton; three grandchildren, Mason Hicks, Erin McNeil and J.T. McNeil; a great-granddaughter, Addisyn McNeil; and two sisters, Lou Ritchie and Patty Love, both of Elizabethton. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
A graveside service for Mr. Chambers will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday, January 10, in the Blevins Cemetery with Pastor Allen Simerly officiating and Rev. Gary Ward assisting. Active pallbearers will be Chris Ritchie, Andy Glass, Eddie Lyons, Charlie Lyons, Justin Delp, Jason Smith, Butch Johnson and Bill Cole. Honorary pallbearers will be Bo Ensor, Smith “Goat” Davenport, Tommy Campbell and Wayne Turbyfill. Military Honors will be accorded by the Carter County Honor Guard. Those wishing to attend are asked to meet at the funeral home at 12:15 p.m. Wednesday to go in procession to the cemetery.
