Betty J. Howell, 82, of Elizabethton, Tenn., formerly of Cadwell, Ga., went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, January 9, 2018, at Ivy Hall Nursing Home. Betty was born in Cadwell, Ga., to the late Albert and Ethel Scarborough Smith. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Emory James Howell, and several brothers and sisters.
Betty was a loving and devoted mother who survived her husband, who died tragically at the young age of 29, in a car accident, which left her to raise five children on her own. She was a United States Navy veteran and a member of Fairview Baptist Church. Betty had worked as a secretary.
Betty was a huge Atlanta Braves baseball fan and enjoyed sewing, crafts, cooking and gardening. Although, her greatest joy was her grandchildren and spending time with her beloved family.
Those left to cherish her memory include her children, Mike Howell (Shirley) of Knoxville, Debra Howell of Mount Carmel, Robin Lewis (Gary) of Jonesborough, Tommy Howell (Lisa) of Elizabethton, and David Howell (Hope) of Washington, D.C.; her grandchildren, Nicki, Bill, Amber, Catherine, Kristy, Michelle, Megan, Joseph, Nathaniel, Benjamin, Jacob, Candance, Sydney, Whitney, Corey and Victoria; nine great-grandchildren; and two sisters.
A graveside service to celebrate the life of Betty J. Howell will be conducted at 10:45 a.m. Friday, January 12, at Mountain Home National Cemetery with Rev. Kenneth Jordan officiating. Active pallbearers will be selected from family. Those wishing to attend the service are asked to meet at the cemetery at 10:35 a.m. Friday. The family would like to especially thank the doctors and staff of Ivy Hall Nursing Home for the love and care shown to Betty during her illness.
