James Hartsell Garland

James Hartsell Garland, 76, of Elizabethton, passed away on Sunday, January 20, 2018, at Sycamore Shoals Hospital. James was born in Johnson City, Tenn., to the late TN and Hazel Waters Garland of Peters Hollow in the Stoney Creek Community of Elizabethton.
Hartsell was a Vietnam Combat veteran with the 1st Infantry Division of XM454 Nuclear Weapons Unit. He was a life member of VFW Post 2166 of Elizabethton. Hartsell was also a member of the Sons of the Revolution and 1st Families of the Civil War. He retired from the Eastman Chemical Company after 31 years of service.
Hartsell was of the Christian faith. He loved life and meeting people and knew people from around the world. His greatest joy was teaching kids Appalachian music. He was a musician and maker of gourd instruments.
Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 46 years, Lula Buckles Garland, and two sisters, Diana Gail Lowe and Teresa Taylor.
A service to honor and celebrate the life of James Hartsell Garland will be conducted at 7 p.m. Thursday, January 25, in the Riverside Chapel of Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton, with Mr. Gerald Holly and Mr. Wayne Mottern, ministers, officiating. Music will be under the direction of New Liberty Quartet. The family will receive friends in the funeral home chapel from 5 until 7 p.m. Thursday, prior to the service. The graveside service will be conducted at 1:45 p.m. Friday, January 26, at Mountain Home National Cemetery. Military Honors will be accorded by the Carter County Honor Guard. Those wishing to attend the graveside service are asked to meet at Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton, at 12:45 p.m. Friday to go in procession.
