The Lady Cyclones found themselves down 13-0 early in Tuesday’s contest against Sullivan East inside John Treadway Gym.
Elizabethton, however, used a big second and fourth quarter to top the Lady Patriots 43-38 for Three Rivers Conference victory.
“We are learning how to win, and we making big strides in that,” said Elizabethton head coach Lucas Andrews.
After one, the Lady Cyclones (3-5 TRC) trailed East 13-5 before Elizabethton came alive in the second period, outpacing the Lady Patriot 17-3. A 3-pointer from Elizabethon’s Kelsie Winters and a layup by Lady Cyclones Destiny Little sent EHS to the locker room leading 24-16.
Elizabethton struggled offensively in the third period as the Lady Cyclones only managed two points in the quarter while East found eight points. The Lady Cyclones held a small 26-24 lead heading into the final frame.
The Lady Patriots tied the game up 26-26 early in the fourth before Elizabethton’s Morgan Headrick had consecutive layups to push the Lady Cyclones out to a four-point edge. A 3-pointer from the Lady Patriots (3-3 TRC) slashed the lead to one before Lady Cyclones Torrie Roberts rained in a trifecta to make it a 33-29 Elizabethton with 2:55 left to play. Roberts and Little connected on the back-to-back 3-pointers to scoot EHS ahead 39-33. The Lady Cyclones totaled 17 points to East’s 14 in the fourth.
Roberts’ two 3-pointers along with her defensive effort in the fourth were big momentum boosters for the Lady Cyclones.
“This is not the first game that she has done it,” said Andrews. “She is a great shooter, but what most people don’t realize about Torrie is that when she wants to lock down her defense, she can lock it down. She has a high basketball IQ.
Elizabethton’s Kaylen Shell and Headrick each finished the game with 10 points each while teammates Winters and Roberts had eight and six, respectively.

The Cyclones had a chance but couldn’t get a game-winning shot to sink on a night where points were hard to come by.
With just 2 seconds left and trailing by one, the Cyclones inbounded the ball under their goal. Elizabethton’s Parker Hughes took a 3-pointer from the side but just missed as the Patriots escaped John Treadway with a 27-26 Three Rivers Conference victory.
“They (East) are number two in the league right,” said Elizabethton head coach Lucas Honeycutt. “They have been tough year in and year out. It is always a good game when we play. We didn’t come out on top, but we feel confident that we can play with anybody in the league.”
With the loss, the Cyclones fell to 3-5 in the TRC while the Patriots moved to 4-2.
Patriots Dustin Bartley finished with a game-high 18 points. For Elizabethton, Nico Ashley, Parker Hughes, and Will Miller all had seven points for the Cyclones.
