County set to begin budget hearings on Monday

Members of the county’s Budget Committee will begin work on setting the budget for the 2018-19 fiscal year this week.
On Monday, the Budget Committee will host the first in a series of budget hearings to meet with the county’s officeholders and department heads regarding their funding requests. The hearing will be held at 6 p.m. at the Carter County Courthouse.
Officeholders and department heads were required to submit their budget requests for the upcoming fiscal year to the county’s Finance Department in February, and the Finance Department staff began compiling those requests.
As part of the budget hearings, members of the Budget Committee will be able to speak with the officeholders and department heads and ask them questions regarding their funding requests.
Below is a listing of the schedule for the 2018-19 budget process:
• April 2 — Solid Waste and Outside Agencies Hearing
• April 9 — Health Department, General Fund, and Tax Relief Hearing; also regularly scheduled meeting
• April 30 — Debt Service, Highway Department, and Education Hearing
• May 3 — Open Date for potential Hearing/Meeting
• May 7 — Open Date for potential Hearing/Meeting
• May 14 — regularly scheduled meeting; Open Date for potential Hearing/Meeting
• May 28 — Budget Committee approves the budget (Voting Meeting)
• May 29 — Publish proposed budget in the newspaper with Public Hearing notice
• June 11 — regularly scheduled meeting; Conduct Public Hearing
• June 18 — Distribute proposed budget to full Carter County Commission
• June 21 — publish Not For Profit funding in newspaper
• July 16 — Commission adopts the new budget
