A North Carolina man drowned Sunday afternoon while attempting to rescue a woman from the Watauga River near Wilbur Dam.

On Monday afternoon, the Carter County Sheriff’s Office identified the deceased man as Hunter Brandon Sadle, 52, of Fletcher, N.C.

Deputies of the CCSO and members of the Carter County Rescue Squad’s Technical Rescue Team responded the Wilbur Dam boat ramp Sunday around 3:15 p.m. after a 911 caller reported people in the river needing rescue.

When deputies arrived at the scene, they learned that four people had gone into the river.

“Two got out safely, Sadle had gone underwater and had not been seen since, and a woman was hanging on rocks on the opposite side of the river when deputies arrived,” a statement released by the CCSO said. “A rescue boat brought the woman back to shore. Afterwards, the boat crew found Sadle’s body in the river. The woman was transported to Sycamore Shoals Hospital.”

The identity of the woman was not released by the CCSO and no further information was immediately available on her condition.
