After all the votes were counted in Thursday night’s election, local officials said voter turnout was down when compared to the last governor’s race primary in 2014.
The August 2 election served as the county’s General Election as well as party primary elections for state and federal offices. A total of 11,392 of the county’s 33,185 registered voters cast ballots in the election, for a voter turnout rate of 34.33 percent.
That turnout marked a drop in voter participation of about 15 percent compared to the August 2014 election. That year, 13,292 of the county’s registered voters cast ballots, for a voter turnout of 49.06 percent.
Election officials spent Friday canvassing the printed tapes from the voting machines to confirm results. Once the canvassing process is complete, the results will be presented to the Carter County Election Commission for certification.
The Carter County Election Commission is scheduled to meet on Monday, August 20 at 9 a.m.
