The Hampton Elementary Jr. Bulldogs hosted Chuckey-Doak to J.C. Campbell Stadium Tuesday.

And at the end of four quarters, the Jr. ‘Dogs had dispatched the Jr. Black Knights, 18-8, for their second straight victory.

“We knew coming in that Chuckey-Doak would be very physical,” said Jr. Bulldogs coach Alex Payne. “We had an injury to Ty Mcelyea, who was our leading scoring and rusher against Unaka. He was injured in the second half. I am just so proud of how the boys stepped up.

“Obviously, Dylan Trivett showed a lot of poise as a quarter,” added Payne. “Our other eighth graders, Jonathan Greenwell, Gage McKinney and Austin Bentley, I feel like just came with an attitude that they did not want to be defeated. I am just so proud of them.”

Early in the second quarter, Hampton’s Austin Bentley took a run up the middle to paydirt to give the Bulldogs a 6-0 lead. However, Chuckey-Doak answered before the half to take an 8-6 lead into intermission.

The Bulldogs, lining up as the kicking team, recovered an onsides kick to open the second half. Shortly after, Hampton’s Gage McKinney broke free for a roughly 60-yard touchdown run to make it a 12-8 contest. The third also saw two big defensive stop by the Bulldogs, with one of those stops coming from a Trivett interception.

In the early minutes of the fourth, Trivett connected with Jr. Bulldogs Geno Carrico on a flag route for a roughly 20-yard passing TD to give the game its final tally.
