Rangers fall in overtime battle

An overtime loss to South Greene overshadowed a big game by Unaka’s Ryan Johnson Tuesday night in Stoney Creek.

Johnson was relentless from outside as he hammered in seven 3-points in route to a game-high 28 points. The Rangers, however, would stumble during the extra four minutes as the Rebels held on for a 57-54 victory.

“He can shoot it,” said Unaka head coach Aaron Dugger about Johnson. “He definitely puts his time in. There is plenty of nights that he comes to my house, gets the key and gets into the gym. That’s what it takes. He is proof that if you work, you can do big things.

“He is five-foot-nothing and weighs 80 pounds soaking wet, but he can flat fill it up,” added Dugger about his sharpshooter.

The teams headed into overtime tied at 46 before Unaka’s Isaac Hill slipped through the Rebels’ defense for an easy bucket to jump the Rangers ahead. The Rebels answered with a 3-pointer from Lennart Schultz, who led the Rebels with 20 points and three treys. Johnson, however, knocked down his seventh trey of the night to move Unaka back out 51-49. Foul shots from Austin Drew gave Unaka a four-point advantage. A costly traveling turnover by Unaka allowed the Rebels to post six straight points as they took a 55-53 lead with 22.5 seconds left. The Rangers cut it to a one-point game as Daniel Ensor connected on a foul shot, but South Greene held on at the foul line to take a victory.

Coming out of first South Greene led 12-11, the Rangers outscored South Greene 17-11 in the second quarter as Johnson hit three trifectas in the period to pace Unaka to a 28-23 lead heading into half.

Hill opened the third with a jumper to give Unaka a seven-point lead before South Greene racked up seven unanswered points to cut Unaka’s lead to 30-28. Johnson exploded for eight straight points as he hit back-to-back 3-points before following up with a close-range bucket to jump Unaka back out 38-30. A buzzer-beating trey from South Greene, sent the teams into the fourth with Unaka leading 40-35.

The Rebels outscored Unaka 11-6 in the fourth quarter to send the game into overtime.

Relentless defense and hot shooting from South Greene’s Kiley Collins would be too much for the Lady Rangers.

Collins had 22 points and six 3-pointers to lead all scorers as South Greene scooted out to a 57-31 victory.

“We showed our youth at times,” said Unaka head coach Kenneth Chambers. “We have some young girls that are playing at times, and they were really nervous. They knew who they were playing. I was still really proud of them. They did really well.”

Unaka was led in scoring by senior Myah Parlier who had 18 points on the night. Ten of Parlier’s points came off feeds from senior point guard Savannah Tipton.

“They have played together for four years and that is what seniors usually do,” said Chambers. “They have learned to play together and that is what they have worked on. That is what we are trying to get out of some of the younger girls.”
