Billy Wayne Hughes, 82, of Hampton, passed away Wednesday, January 30, 2019, at James H. Quillen VA Medical Center. He was born February 22, 1936 in Hampton.
Bill was a 1955 graduate of Hampton High School where he played on the basketball and football teams. He loved all sports and was an avid Tennessee Vols Fan. Bill served in the United States Navy. He was a construction worker for Coolidge Johnson Contractor for 28 years.
Through the years Bill had played with several Bluegrass Bands. He was a member of Pearce Chapel Free Will Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Minerva Lucille Hughes.
Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Shelby Simerly Hughes; one daughter, Patricia “Susie” Hughes Breeden and husband Ronnie, Jonesborough; three special cousins, Opal, Richard and Connie; five brothers-in-law and one sister-in-law.
Graveside services for Billy Wayne Hughes will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Monday, February 4, at Mountain Home National Cemetery with the Rev. Ronnie Campbell officiating. Interment will follow the service. Pallbearers will be selected from family and friends. The family will receive friends from 4 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Military Honors will be provided by the Carter County Honor Guard. Family and friends will assemble at the cemetery at 2:20 p.m. Monday.
