Martin Howard Clarke

Martin Howard Clarke, 75, of Elizabethton, passed away Sunday, February 17, 2019, at Erwin Health Care Center following an extended illness. He was born February 10, 1944 in Elizabethton to the late Leverett Kenneth and Sally Summers Clarke.
Martin was a 1963 graduate of Science Hill High School and attended Steed College, Johnson City. He retired in 2009 as a security guard at Sycamore Shoals Hospital. Prior to that he was employed as a bailiff with the Carter County Sheriff’s Department for many years. Martin started out working at Carter County Bank. He was a FCC Licensed Commercial Examiner.
Martin was a member of Watauga Masonic Lodge #622 and the Knoxville Scottish Rite Bodies. He had a love for Collie dogs, Ham Radio and photography. He was a member of Oak Street Baptist Church but attended First Christian Church, Johnson City. He was an Amateur Radio Operator-Extra Class.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Kenneth Clarke.
Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Janet “Jane” Williams Clarke; a daughter and son-in-law, Rebecca and Daniel Proffitt, Elizabethton; two grandchildren, Amelia and Hudson; his sister-in-law, Brenda Clarke; a nephew, Kevin Clarke; two nieces, Deborah Smith and Donna Greer; and his cousin, Bill Zimmerman.
A small graveside service for the family is planned for 2 p.m. Tuesday, February 19, at Happy Valley Memorial Park with Chaplain Chuck Shipley officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in memory of Martin to the Lewy Body Dementia Association, 912 Killian Hill Road SW, Lilburn, GA 30047.
