Tate Whittington

Tate Whittington, 89, of Elizabethton, passed away Saturday, March 30, 2019, at his residence.
A native of Avery County, N.C., he was a son of the late Tom Miller and Stella Whittington. He had lived in Carter County for a number of years.
Mr. Whittington was retired from Ryder Truck Rentals. Prior to that he had served as a Deputy at the Avery County Sheriff’s Department and as a Chief Deputy at the Mitchell County Sheriff’s Department. He was a member of Watauga Valley Free Will Baptist Church. In his earlier days he loved to play golf. After retirement he loved to buy and sell produce, trees and shrubbery.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters and two brothers.
Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Louella Winters Whittington; his children, Sharon Kirby, Fayetteville, N.C., Bobby Whittington, Spruce Pine, N.C., and Randall Cook and wife Misty, Elizabethton; a step-son, Randy Cook, Hickory, N.C.; two granddaughters, Annette Kirby, Wilmington, N.C., and Jennifer Fincher and husband Shawn, Fayetteville, N.C.; a sister, Carleen Snyder, Spruce Pine, N.C.; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services for Tate Whittington will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 2, at Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Bill Greer and the Rev. Keith Gwyn officiating. Interment will follow in the Johnson-Roan View Cemetery, Roan Mountain. Active pallbearers will be Mike Snyder, Johnny Snyder, Larry Stout, Timothy Gwyn, Terry Shell and Johnny Baker. Honorary pallbearers will be Donny Richardson, Luke Gwyn, Doug Thomas and his church family. The family would like to express a special “Thank You” to the staff of Johnson City Medical Center and Caris Hospice. The family will receive friends from 1 until 2 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
