“I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith. Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day; and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing.” 2 Timothy 4:7-8 (KJV)
Mr. Jack Shook, 81, of Elizabethton, went to be with his heavenly father on Monday, April 1, 2019, at Johnson City Medical Center after a brief illness. He was surrounded by his wife, children, grandchildren, daughter-in-law and sons-in-law.
Mr. Shook was born and raised in Plumtree, N.C., on April 23, 1937. He was a lifelong resident of Elizabethton, Tenn., and was the son of Charles and Ebbie Shook.
Mr. Shook was a graduate of Cranberry High School and attended Lees-McRae College and Steed College. He was retired from Siemens, Raytheon and Sperry Univac where he was on the design team that tested the computers for the Apollo space missions and designed the now famous barcode. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Air Force and TN Army National Guard. He willingly volunteered his time with the Carter County Rescue Squad and continued to teach CPR classes for not only the Rescue Squad but also former places of employment.
He was a former member of Hunter First Baptist Church and a current member of Lynn Valley Baptist Church. Jack always loved Sunday School and said that it was the foundation of the church. He taught Sunday School for many years and served as Sunday School superintendent and was proud to see record attendance while holding that position. He was known to be a huge encourager to the youth and to those who would go on to be missionaries and ministers.
Jack loved the Lord and was always faithful to serving him. His first love was the Lord followed by his family and country. He was always ready to brag on his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and step-children. He had a quick wit and would always give you that look. He was known as dad, papa, daddy Jack and Mr. Shook (heavy on the Mister). He will be greatly missed by all of those that loved him so much but we rest in the hope that he is now made whole and we will see him again soon.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Barbara Shook, and a brother, Robert Shook.
Survivors include his wife, Josie Kirbo Shook, of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Dale and Kelly Shook, Elizabethton; two daughters and sons-in-law, Pennie and Brent Terry, Elizabethton, and Jackie and Brian Potter, Kingsport; six grandchildren, Leslie and Robert Pickens, Emilee and Jarread Whitehead, BreAnna Terry, Blake Terry (fiancée Amber English), and Lauren Potter; four great-grandchildren, Hayden Pickens, Hadley Georgiou, Eliza and Ellie Whitehead; two step-children, Randy and Lisa Kirbo, Asheville, N.C., and Nancy and Jacob Sills, Covington, Ga.; three step-grandchildren, Josh (Katy) Kirbo, Mia Kirbo and Sarah (Brandon) Casto; two step-great-grandchildren, Natalie and Benjamin Kirbo; four sisters, Betty Herbst, Barbara Buchanan, Florence Dellinger and Alice Stamey, all of Spruce Pine, N.C.; and one brother, Harry Shook, Spruce Pine, N.C. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
A Celebration of Life Service for Mr. Jack Shook will be held Thursday, April 4, at 7 p.m. following visitation from 4 to 7 p.m. at Memorial Funeral Chapel. The service will be conducted by Reverend Dennis Wilson and Reverend Jim Hawk. Active pallbearers include Brian Potter, Brent Terry, Blake Terry, Robert Pickens, Jarread Whitehead and Keith Glover. Honorary pallbearers will be the men of Lynn Valley Baptist Church. A graveside service will be held Friday at 10 a.m. at Happy Valley Memorial Park with military honors by the Carter County Honor Guard. Friends may visit the family at the home of his son, Dale Shook, or at his residence anytime. Family and friends will assemble at the funeral home at 9:20 a.m. Friday to go to the cemetery.
