South builds early lead to defeat Lady Cyclones, 8-1

The Lady Cyclones of Elizabethton traveled to Sullivan South on Thursday looking to get a much-needed win to stay in the hunt in the Three Rivers Conference, but after getting the first run on the board, the Lady Cyclones weren’t able to defensively shut down the Lady Rebels.
Answering the solo run in the top of the first inning with three of their own in the bottom of the inning, the Lady Rebels held the Lady Cyclones scoreless the rest of the way to claim an 8-1 win.
Maddie O’Quinn led off the game by reaching on an error by South’s first baseman. A sacrifice bunt by Maggie Johnson advanced O’Quinn to second base.
Kira Dillard worked a walk to put Lady Cyclones at first and second base. Both runners took an extra bag on a double steal.
An error on the South catcher allowed O’Quinn to race home for the game’s first run.
After Mack Compton and Nichole Troutman sandwiched singles between a sacrifice bunt, the Lady Rebels Allison Chapman lofted a ball over the center field fence for a three-run home run to stake South to a lead they would not relinquish.
South added a solo run in the bottom of the third, two runs in the fourth, and two more in the sixth to earn the win.
The Lady Rebels cranked out 13 hits in the victory.
Elizabethton was led at the plate by Marley Wagner who had a 2-for-3 day at the plate. Johnson, Dillard, Kaylen Shell, and Kallista Deprimo added one hit apiece.
Hannah Edwards was in the pitching circle for the Lady Cyclones going three and one-third of an inning allowing six runs on eight hits. Edwards walked one Lady Rebel batter.
Wagner went the remaining two and two-thirds of an inning in relief giving up two runs on five hits and walking two South batters.
Compton and Lauren Day had big days with the bat as each Lady Rebel had a 3-for-4 day against Lady Cyclone pitching.
