The Elizabethton Downtown Farmer’s Market will be setting up their new location tonight in the third block of East Elk right in front of The Riverside Taphouse and Big Dan’s BBQ just like they will be doing until September 24 from 4 to 7 p.m. The change in location will result in commuters not participating in the market having a short detour via Post Office Street.
The new location is a milestone achieved by the market who had in the past been relegated to a comparatively obscure part of downtown on F Street across the street from the police department.
The previous cramped location was the subject of April’s Elizabethton city council meeting. During the meeting, the current location, which gives the market much more exposure and room to operate, was discussed and voted on. After some concerns about traffic issues and current business interference were expressed, the council gave the nod for the new location with only one nay vote.
“We are thankful that the majority of the council were supportive of bringing more business downtown,” said market manager Danica Krebs.
The market is expected to have between 15 to 20 vendors selling fresh produce and other wares grown locally from Carter and adjoining county farms.
Live music from performer Just Chuck and the Tri-Bites food truck will also be present. The Riverside Taphouse, which would have normally been closed, will also be open during the event and will be offering $1 off tap beer.
Parking for the event will be on the available spots on Elk Avenue, behind Big Dan’s and Riverside Taphouse, and at Edward’s Island Park.
Krebs said that they have received a vast amount of support from the community and local businesses for the implementation of a farmer’s market. “We are glad many of the businesses, such as Jiggy Ray’s, in the area have agreed to stay open later to accept customers,” she added.
Krebs also said that the market is grateful for the Parks and Recreation’s help in setting at the new location and the other members that sit on the market’s board of advisors that include the city’s chapter of United Way, Chamber of Commerce, the Northeast Community Credit Union and the Parks and Recreation Department as well as members from local farms.
