Jo Ann “Toot” Bishop Carver

Jo Ann “Toot” Bishop Carver, 85, of Johnson City, went to be with her heavenly father on Thursday, July 11, 2019, at Johnson City Medical Center after a lengthy illness.
Jo Ann was the daughter of Worley and Mary Eliza Jordan Bishop. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by brothers, Ishmael, Harold, Tommy, Charles, Jack, John Henry and Bob, and her sisters, Anna Faulkner, Gussie Ison, Ruth Cornett, Juanita Cooley and Frances Sams. Jo Ann was also preceded in death by a son, Michael Nelson.
Jo Ann graduated from Elizabethton High School and East Tennessee State University with a degree in nursing. She was a Plant Nurse at the local Rayon Plants in her early years of employment. She was a member of First Freewill Baptist Church of Elizabethton, where she was a loyal supporter of the Volunteer Sunday School Class.
Jo Ann is survived by her loving husband of 48 years, Harold Carver; a daughter, Cathy Stout Grindstaff; and a son, Richard Nelson. Also surviving are two brothers, Jimmy Bishop of Elizabethton and Kenneth Bishop of Nahunta, Ga.; her grandchildren, Megan Redman, Charlotte, N.C., Michelle Grubbs and Julie Bailey, both of Unicoi, Todd Nelson and Travis Nelson of Elizabethton; her great-grandchildren, Dylan Nelson, Haley Grubbs, Alexus Grubbs, George Nelson and Johan Redman; and her great-great-granddaughter, Reilei Nelson.
Funeral services for Jo Ann “Toot” Bishop Carver will be conducted at 7 p.m. Saturday, July 13, at Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Nathan Jennings and the Rev. Mike Berry officiating. Music will be provided by Grady and Alecia Holder and Carol Bowers, organist. Graveside services and interment will be at 1 p.m. Sunday, July 14, at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Active pallbearers, who are requested to assemble at the funeral home at 12:20 p.m. Sunday, will be Todd Nelson, Travis Nelson, Dylan Nelson, Richard Carver, Allen Carver and Danny Carver. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Steeple Fund, First Freewill Baptist Church, 706 First Street, Elizabethton, TN 37643. The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Friends may also visit with the family at her residence. Family and friends will assemble at the funeral home at 12:20 p.m. Sunday to go to the cemetery. Condolences may be sent to the family at our website at www.memorialfcelizabethton.com.
