KINGSPORT- The Elizabethton Twins went into Wednesday night’s game against the Kingsport Mets with two things in mind to accomplish and did both.
The first thing is they avoided a three-game sweep by the Mets and secondly with their 6-3 win, the E-Twins won the 2019 series against the Mets five games to four as they were dead even heading into Wednesday night’s contest.
The Twins put together a solid game all around as they rapped out 13 hits while Twin pitching held the Mets to only five hits and three runs.
Designated hitter Parker Phillips led the offensive charge with a 3-for-4 performance. A quartet of E-Twins stroked two hits in the contest including Ruben Santana, Matt Wallner, Max Smith, and Janigson Villalobos.
One of Wallner’s hits went yard for a two-run home run which was the right fielder’s fourth round tripper of the season.
DaShawn Keirsey and Trevor Jenson accounted for the other two Twins hits on the night.
If there was a glaring stat, it had to be that the E-Twins left 10 men on base and were 4-for-18 with runners in scoring position.
Anthony Dirocie led the home standing Mets with a pair of base knocks in the game including a triple. Scott Ota collected a triple as well for Kingsport.
Cody Laweryson got the starting nod from Twins manager Ray Smith and went three innings. He allowed no runs and no hits in his short stint and fanned two Met batters.
Erik Cha (5-1) came in relief to pick up his fifth win of the season against one loss tossing 3.1 innings of three-hit baseball. Cha didn’t record a strikeout and allowed two of the three Mets runs in his work.
Smith called upon Ryan Shreve who worked the final 2.2 innings of baseball to record his third save of the season in doing so.
The Mets were 1-of-10 with runners in scoring position and left five runners stranded.
Elizabethton started it’s most important series of the season Thursday and continues tonight as they look to pull even or go ahead of the Johnson City Cardinals who had a two-game lead going into Thursday night’s game.
Start time for tonight’s game is 6:30 pm as well as Saturday night’s contest with both games being played at Northeast Community Credit Union Ball Park.
