Raymond Stewart Montgomery

Raymond Stewart Montgomery, 86, of Roan Mountain, Tenn., went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, August 14, 2019, from the Johnson City Medical Center. Raymond was born in Carter County to the late Taylor and Viola Harmon Montgomery. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Juanita Banner Montgomery; his brothers, John Rex Montgomery, George “Champ” Montgomery, Willard Montgomery and Glenn Montgomery; and four sisters, Stella Frances Fox, Lillian Nunley, Laura Alona Williams and Margie M. Ashley.
Raymond was a man who loved his God, country and family. Raymond was a member of Pleasant Beach Baptist Church in Elizabethton. He retired from the United States Army after 22 years of service to his country — serving in Korea and Vietnam and continued his dedication to his country by working at the Veterans Administration. He also enjoyed traveling, fishing and camping.
Those left to cherish his legacy include his daughter, Ramona Bing and husband Tim of Ohio; two sons, Fernando Montgomery and wife Debbie of Hampton and Eugene Montgomery of Pennsylvania; his foster daughter, Elaine Gregg Stamper and husband Harvey of North Carolina; three grandchildren, Nathan Montgomery of Hampton, Renee Green and husband Richard of Valley Forge and Beth Vargo and husband William of Ohio; three great-grandchildren; and one sister, Vera Lou Lowe and husband Jim. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
A service to celebrate and honor the life of Raymond Stewart Montgomery will be conducted at 7 p.m. Sunday, August 18, in the Riverside Chapel of Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton, with Pastor Mark Fowler officiating. The family will receive friends in the funeral home chapel from 5 until 7 p.m. Sunday, prior to the service. The graveside service will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Monday, August 19, in the Walnut Mountain Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be selected from family and friends. Honorary pallbearers will be Bob Arnold and Bob Johnson. Those wishing to attend the service are asked to meet at the cemetery at 2:15 p.m. Monday.
