In a big tune-up for next week’s District 1 Large School tournament, the tee boxes, fairways, greens, and roughs at Elizabethton Golf Course was filled to capacity as golfers converged on the course to offer strong competition and get a preview of what to expect next Monday at Ridgefield’s Country Club with a shot at the regional tournament on the line.
The tournament played at EGC had no major bearing on next week’s district tournament in regard to earning a regional berth other than set the pairings for the groups teeing off and will be counted toward next week’s scores to see who makes the All-District team.
On the boy’s side of play, the ‘Toppers outdistanced Dobyns-Bennett as SH tallied a team total 296 which was 29 strokes better than the Indians who finished out the day with a 325.
The Vikings of Tennessee High came in third in boy’s play with a 328 just three strokes off Dobyns-Bennett’s pace.
Jackson Skeen of the ‘Toppers led his team with an 18-hole total of 70 on the day while teammates Tarun Hoskere and Carter Counts each fired 75’s on the day. Ross Boehling made up the four-team scoring total with a 76.
For the Indians, Zac Fletcher had a 78 and William Karst a 79 to help D-B secure the second-place finish. Taylor Kilgore (81) and Sam Barbour (87) closed out the team round.
Tennessee High was led by Jack Tickle who completed his 18 holes of play with a 74. Evan Jones added a 77.
For Elizabethton who ended the day with a team total of 335, Caleb Tipton had the low score of the day with an 80 followed by Carson Peters with an 83. Cooper Tipton added an 18-hole total of 85 while Kerry Williams finished with an 87.
In girls’ play, the Lady Rebels won the day with a team total of 158 which takes into account the two lowest scores of the day for the team. Kara Carter continued her excellent play this season by firing a 74 while Kirstyn Moore added an 84 to lead South to the first-place finish.
Tennessee High collected second place with a 164 with Madeline Simcox carding out with an 80 followed by Isabella Adkins with an 84.
There was a two-way tie for third place as Dobyns-Bennett and Daniel Boone both finished with a 174.
Elizabethton’s Lady Cyclones had a good day on the course as Coach Lucas Andrews team finished in a tie for fourth place with Sullivan East as each team completed the 18 holes with a 196.
Hannah Williams played a solid round for Elizabethton with a 94 while Katelyn Kechter and Hannah McDonnell ended up with identical 102’s.
