When South Greene (8-0, 2-0) makes the trip up to Hampton (5-2, 1-1) tonight, the game will mean more than just a win.
With a ‘W’ on Friday, Hampton will move into a tie with the Rebels for second place in the division with a Happy Valley loss putting everyone on level terms.
The game is huge for multiple reasons including playoff seeding and South Greene’s perfect record, but the biggest thing for Hampton is continuing their hot streak.
The Bulldogs are just a couple of plays from being first in the division, but this is their best chance at atoning for the Happy Valley loss earlier in the season.
Coming off a big win against cross-conference rival Cloudland, the Bulldogs will look to keep the ball rolling in a bit of a tougher scenario. The Bulldogs still know that they’ve come a long way.
Hampton head coach, Michael Lunsford, talked about how his team turned around the 1-2 start to the season saying the biggest reason was, “our kids maturing and learning to limit the mental mistakes and learning how hard you have to play to win.”
Moving forward to this week Lunsford pointed out that a big key to stopping the Rebels this week is stopping their running game and keeping their QB (Luke Myers) under wraps.
The reigning conference player of the year has lifted South Greene to their current unblemished record and looks poised to try and knock the Bulldogs off Friday.
As far as personnel goes for Hampton this week, Coach Lunsford says that the key to the kingdom is in the trenches.
“Our offensive and defensive lines have to play well – guys like Max Cash, Caleb Oaks, Caleb McKinney, and Morgan Lyons defensively.” Lunsford continued saying it was imperative that he get a big game from James Tolley, Doug Tolley, and McKinley Kuhn.
Ultimately for Hampton, they’ve got to be able to stop Luke Myers and the dynamic South Greene offense if they want to create what looks to be an epic match-up.
The game kicks off this Friday at Hampton at 7:30 pm.
