DAR celebrates Domestic Violence Awareness Month

The Julius Dugger-John Carter Chapter NSDAR met October 5 at the Elizabethton/Carter County Public Library. Chapter Regent Dora Kinzer presided and upcoming events were planned and discussed by the membership.
Since October is National Domestic Violence Awareness month, DAR President General Denise VanBuren encouraged members to wear purple as a show of solidarity against violence. They were also asked to wear red every Friday to show support for the men and women deployed to protect our freedom. The National Defense report listed some signs of abuse and ways we could help. The American Indian Moment was about an old warrior telling about how the true spirit of Jesus had long been observed in the Indian nations. Donations were taken to help with shoe boxes for hospitalized military personnel at Mountain Home VA during the Christmas holidays.
The program about the Children of the American Revolution (CAR) was presented by Grace Ann Clark from the Fort Watauga Chapter CAR. CAR is the nation’s oldest, largest patriotic youth organization. Membership to either DAR or CAR is open to anyone lineally descended from someone who aided the cause of American Independence.
The chapter planned to participate in the Naturalization Ceremony held outdoors at the Andrew Johnson Homestead in Greeneville on Oct. 10. DAR members served cookies, coffee and water to 73 new citizens from 42 countries. Chapter Regent Dora Kinzer handed out American flags to new citizens as they received their citizenship documents.
The next meeting of the Julius Dugger-John Carter Chapter NSDAR will be held at the Elizabethton/Carter County Public Library on Saturday, Nov. 2, at 10:15 a.m. The public is welcome to attend.
