KNOXVILLE – There’s nothing like having a plate of hot chicken for supper and on Saturday the University of Tennessee Volunteers sat down and enjoyed a big buffet of Gamecocks as the Vols didn’t leave anything but slim pickings once the game came to a close.
After a South Carolina touchdown on the first play from scrimmage, the Vols settled in and picked up their second SEC victory of the season and third overall in laying a whipping on Coach Will Muschamp’s South Carolina Gamecocks with a 41-21 victory.
The Volunteers didn’t need help getting the fire hot as the officials were doing plenty of that with another week of lackadaisical officiating sending the 87,397 fans into a frenzy and adding more fire to the Tennessee sideline.
With the decibels ringing so loud that even the referee trying to add time to the clock became a major obstacle, the players responded with their best output of the season racking up 485 yards of offense and their highest point total of the season.
Meanwhile, Coach Jeremy Pruitt started redshirt freshman J.T. Shrout before inserting Jarrett Guarantano later in the quarter.
Guarantano responded with his best outing of the season after last week’s big debacle at Alabama led many fans to want to boycott the game if he started.
By the time the redshirt junior left the game with a broken bone in his wrist, the New Jersey native had done his best to atone for last week and the year to date by completing 11-of-19 passes in the contest for 229 yards and two scores.
Shrout also had an outstanding game connecting on his first passing touchdown of the season and completing 7-of-11 passes for 122 yards and the score.
The Tennessee offensive line showed why the future is bright on Rocky Top as the o-line allowed zero sacks in the game.
But once again, it was crowd favorite and a true Vol For Life in Jauan Jennings who showed that this Tennessee team is just getting better each week and now has the possibility of finishing out the rest of the season with victories to earn a bowl bid.
Jennings was a B-E-A-S-T recording seven catches for 174 yards and two scores often dragging two, three, and four defenders for extra yards after the catch.
The senior also added five carries from the Wildcat for 18 yards to finish with 192 all-purpose yards in the contest.
Marquez Callaway was another senior wideout with a big game as Callaway caught three passes for 102 yards and a touchdown and added a 65-yard punt return for a score that sent the orange-clad Neyland Stadium into wild euphoria and turned the game in the Vols favor.
Ty Chandler led the Vols on the ground with 16 carries for 80 yards while Tim Jordan added eight carries for 19 yards.
Defensively, Daniel Bituli had the game of his life as well as the senior had a blocked punt and recovered the ball in the end zone for a touchdown and added 15 tackles from his linebacker slot.
Nigel Warrior added 10 tackles while freshman sensation Henry To’o To’o collected eight and Jaylen McCollough five.
Placekicker Brent Cimaglia blasted two field goals in the game hitting from 46 and 31 yards.
Freshman signal-caller Ryan Hilinski completed 28-of-51 passes for South Carolina covering 319 yards and one score. He was sacked three times in the contest by the Vols defense.
The Vols will now turn their attention to the University of Alabama Birmingham as once again Tennessee will be at home looking for win number four this upcoming weekend.
