Teams that have Hampton on their schedule after the Christmas break had better take a deep breath and tighten up their short strings because the way the Bulldogs are starting to play could mean for a long night.
Behind a strong, pressing defense and a big offensive output in the second period that saw Hampton pour in 31 points in the period, the Bulldogs chomped down on the Black Knights of Chuckey Doak Thursday night by an 80-61 score in VanHuss White Gym.
The game opened with both teams exchanging baskets in the first quarter as at the first stop, the game was pretty much where it began deadlocked at 19-all.
Caleb Oaks was dominating in the period scoring six points at point-blank range in the paint while Morgan Lyons and Conor Jones matched one another with a trey and a field goal for five points each.
Alex Maupin scored seven to lead the Black Knights early while Corwin Ramsey dropped in six points.
Hampton caught fire in the second stanza as the Bulldogs ran the Black Knights out of the gym outscoring their visitors 31-9 in the period to take a comfortable 50-28 lead at the break.
Jordan Bentley led the charge with 12 points in the stanza while Jones and Rocky Croy chipped in with a six-point period each.
Lyons added four more to his total while Matt Hughes totaled three in the period.
Chuckey Doak came out of the locker room and settled as the Black Knights took the third quarter 16-14 to shave a couple of points off the lead.
Both teams went back to exchanging buckets in the final eight minutes as Doak took the fourth period by the slimmest of margins, 17-16.
Bentley led the ‘Dogs on the night with 18 points and was followed by Croy with 14 points and Jones and Lyons with 13 points each.
Oaks finished with nine points while Hughes tallied six. Garrett Vines (3), Izaak Hill (3), and Nate Wilson (1) balanced the scoring ledger for Hampton.
Maupin finished with a game-high 27 points to pace Chuckey Doak. Kameron Yost added 11 points while Ramsey finished with 10 points.
Hampton head coach Ned Smith was happy with his team’s effort especially their unselfishness.
“We just had a big gun there in the second period and the kids shared the ball well,” said Smith after the contest. “I thought we shot a high percentage with our shot selection.
“The intensity kind of fell off in the third and we played even from there. We had 19 assists and I thought that was great. We had several kids with three or four assists apiece. It was good chemistry and I thought the kids played well together.”
Hampton hosts the Happy Valley Warriors Monday night at 8 pm.
