Rep. John Holsclaw gives report on legislative work

It is my honor and privilege to serve the people of House District 4 in the Tennessee General Assembly. As your State Representative, I will continue to work to make government more accountable to our taxpayers, support common-sense initiatives that enable our community and this state to thrive, and fight to uphold your Tennessee values. Your input on all matters is vital to me because I represent you and not special interests.

In recent years, my colleagues and I have worked diligently to improve education, transform our healthcare system, solidify our current and future workforces, create more employment for our citizens, improve transportation and infrastructure, and begin efforts to overhaul our current system of justice. Additionally, we have continued to lower taxes to make your spendable income go further. In fact, last year alone, we cut $35.2 million in taxes — including eliminating the professional privilege tax, tossing the gym tax, and repealing the ammunition tax on our law abiding citizens.

As part of our plan to improve overall safety — especially on our roadways — I passed the “Hands-Free” bill during the 2019 legislative session. This initiative was designed to save lives by eliminating distracted driving-related deaths across our state. I was also proud to co-sponsored legislation that creates a Katie Beckett Waiver program in order to provide lifesaving medical services through TennCare for children with the most significant disabilities and highest medical needs, regardless of their parental income levels.

While we have experienced some remarkable successes during the previously concluded legislative session, we must now focus on the second half of the 111th General Assembly, which is quickly approaching.

In 2020, we will continue to look for new ways to transform the way healthcare is delivered through innovation, fiscal responsibility, improving transparency and encouraging competition. We will also look to build upon our recent improvements related to education. This includes addressing deficiencies in the focus areas of early childhood literacy, continuing to recruit and retain the best and brightest educators, and creating new programs and pathways for our current and future generations. We will also look for ways to continue to attract new businesses to our communities and this state and support our workforce, so it is better prepared to meet 21st-century demands and achieve successful futures. We must also look to advance our work creating safe neighborhoods by continuing our discussions related to criminal justice reform. Our focus must be about remaining tough on crime and holding the worst of the worst accountable, but also being smart on crime and supporting those who desire to leave behind their previous mistakes so they can become productive citizens.
