For forward-thinking souls already planning on how to shake off the effects of the holidays and lean into 2020, Tennessee State Parks might have just the ticket.

The state park system is ushering in the New Year with First Day Hikes on Jan. 1.

The free, guided hikes are available at all state parks with the exception of Bicentennial Capitol Mall State Park, which hosts the annual New Year’s Eve event in Nashville.

“The New Year is a time many Tennesseans will make resolutions to be more active, and the First Day Hikes are a great way to fulfill that,” Jim Bryson, deputy commissioner of the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation, said. “The hikes range from nice strolls to rugged terrain, so we hope everyone will consider this outstanding way to welcome in 2020.”

Each hike is led by an experienced park ranger and is part of America’s State Parks First Day Hikes in all 50 states.

However, three first-day hikes in the Northeast Tennessee area are already filled up – the After Dark Adventure at Rocky Fork State Park in Flag Pond, the First Footing at Carter Mansion featured by Sycamore Shoals State Park, and the Light Up the Night hike at Warriors Path State Park in Kingsport.

Still open is the hike to Round Bald at Roan Mountain State Park. Those wishing to make the hike are asked to meet at the park’s visitor center at 9 a.m. Hikers will travel to Carvers Gap to begin the hike on the Appalachian Trial to Round Bald.

Hikers are urged to wear clothing and footwear suitable for the windy and cold outdoors.

Pre-registration is required by calling 547-3900.
