ROGERSVILLE (AP) — The Cherokee High School Navy junior ROTC purchased 505 wreaths to lay on military graves during the Mountain Home National Cemetery’s Wreaths Across America ceremony in Johnson City this year.
The group started fundraising in October, pulling in $7,576 in donations, the Kingsport Times News reported. Over the last four years, the unit has raised $45,263 for the project.
The Dec. 14 ceremony included an invocation, the national anthem and 60 seconds of silence. Seven wreaths presented during the ceremony honored each individual military branch’s active personnel, veterans and fallen.
Upon conclusion of the ceremony, the Cherokee High School group and others walked through placing live wreaths with red bows on the graves. After placing the wreaths, cadets took a couple of steps back, offered a hand salute, said the veteran’s name and expressed thanks for their service.
