MEMPHIS (AP) — A man whose wife disappeared last year was indicted on a second-degree murder charge in the case, a Tennessee prosecutor said Monday.

Carl Hayes, 43, was also charged with tampering with evidence and was being held on $2 million bond, Shelby County District Attorney Amy Weirich’s office said in a news release.

Taquila Hayes, 41, disappeared in May, and her mother filed a missing person report in August, saying she had not seen or heard from her daughter in more than two months, sheriff’s office investigators said.

Detectives said the husband told them his wife, a nurse, abruptly quit her hospital job and that they separated in June, the release said. He told detectives she left their home with an unknown friend and that he was the last person to see her, according to the release.

Relatives told investigators that it wasn’t like Taquila Hayes to leave behind her 12-year-old son, her cellphone and a new job, the release said.

Online jail records did not indicate whether Carl Hayes was represented by a lawyer who could comment on his behalf.
