FROM STAFF REPORTS
The Elizabethton Cyclone wrestling team traveled to Knox Gibbs High School over the weekend with lofty goals in mind as a finish in the top four of the region would advance the wrestlers to the state competition in Brentwood which begins Friday.
With Tyesha Thomas already qualifying for the Cyclones on the girls’ side, it was the boys turn to take to the mats.
When the dust settled and the lights were dimmed, the Cyclones had advanced five wrestlers to the state tournament.
In the 106 weight class, Holden Roaten earned a third-place finish with a sudden victory over Josue Castillo of Greeneville.
Isiah King picked up a second-place finish at 120 after squaring off against Caleb Gumlick of Pigeon Forge. Gumlick picked up the victory with a pin over King.
Peyton Freeman earned a trip by finishing in fourth place in the 126 weight bracket. Freeman fell in the third-place match to Gibbs wrestler Owen DeLuca who won by pinfall.
Alex Conley continued a stellar season on the mat for the Cyclones as he ran his record to 36-8 and a second-place finish after dropping a tough match to Greeneville’s Isaac Haynie by pinfall. Conley wrestles in the 170 weight class.
Finally, Deuce Morton (41-2) was once again a beast on the mat taking care of three opponents on his way to the Region 1A-AA title at 195 and earning the opportunity to defend his state title from a year ago.
Morton also collected the Outstanding Wrestler award for the day in the tournament.
