JOHNSON CITY — The Student Advisory Council of East Tennessee State University’s Department of Music will host its third annual Community Charity Concert on Friday, March 6, at 7:30 p.m. in the Brown Hall auditorium.

There is no admission fee, but donations are welcome. All proceeds from this variety show will benefit the Washington County-Johnson City Animal Shelter.

The program will feature students of the Department of Music in solo and ensemble performances. Included are a number of the department’s ensembles, such as ETSU Chorale, Percussion Ensemble, Jazz Combo, Swashbucklers, Harmonium, Ascension and The Buc 5, a barber shop-style group. Sunny Side of the Mountain, a band from ETSU’s Bluegrass, Old-Time and Country Music Studies program, will also perform.

In addition, some of the current residents of the Animal Shelter will be hanging out outside the auditorium entrance in the Brown Hall courtyard the evening of the concert. Those in attendance are encouraged to come early to meet and visit with these dogs and consider adoption. Animal Shelter representatives will be on hand to provide information and adoption paperwork.

Previous Community Charity Concerts organized by ETSU’s music students netted approximately $1,200 toward hurricane relief in 2018 and around $800 to benefit the Dawn of Hope in 2019.

When the members of the Student Advisory Council met to determine a beneficiary for the proceeds of this year’s concert, the Washington County-Johnson City Animal Shelter was a popular choice.

“Personally, I’m a huge animal lover, and a lot of the other people on our council are animal lovers,” said Autumn Brockelman, a junior vocal education major from Knoxville who is leading the council’s concert planning efforts. “We thought, ‘Just about everybody loves animals,’ so we reached out to the Animal Shelter, and they were thrilled to cooperate with us on this concert.”

“We are so grateful to the students of ETSU’s Music Department for choosing to help the Animal Shelter this year,” said Tammy Davis, executive director of the shelter. “We appreciate every student who volunteers at the shelter and the awareness this concert will bring to our need for both donations and volunteers. We are able to provide the best possible care to every animal because of our amazing community, my staff and our volunteers.”

The students in the Department of Music see these annual Charity Concerts as an important way to give back to the community in appreciation for its support, which comes in attendance at student concerts throughout the year and funding for scholarships, international travel and more.

“Our goal is to continue growing these concerts to have a greater presence in our community,” Brockelman said. “We care about our community and want to do everything we can to improve and help non-profit organizations. The community’s support of us is extremely meaningful, and just seeing the community come together as a whole to benefit others is really a goal.”
