After gaining approval from the Carter County School Board, the 16th Annual Hampton Basketball Classic is gaining strength as tournament director Mike Matheson is getting the word out any way he can to promote the golf tournament.
The tournament is especially important to the boys’ and girls’ basketball program at Hampton as it is the biggest fundraiser that they have all year long.
Slated to tee off on Saturday, June 13th with an 8 am and 1 pm shotgun start, Matheson is hoping that golfers will be ready to come out for a fun day of golf and help the Hampton programs.
There is a $50 entry fee per individual or $200 per four-man team. The cost covers the entry fee plus lunch for each player.
Also, Matheson said that he will not be reaching out for hole sponsors this season as they will be using the same hole sponsors as last year’s tournament.
“We will be using the hole sponsors that we had last year and will not be asking for them to pay,” Matheson said. “The reason being is that with this COVID-19, we want to help those businesses.
“We really appreciate them and all the help they have given us through the years.”
Over the last few years, the tournament has drawn between 42 to 48 teams but Matheson said that he hopes more will come out this year as golfers look to get back in the swing of things after COVID-19 has interrupted much of the early part of 2020.
The tournament has proved to be a blessing for the basketball program at Hampton High School.
“It’s the biggest fundraiser that we have,” Matheson reiterated. “We split the money evenly between the boys and the girl’s teams.
“We work together on it and any donations would be appreciated as well because it does go toward a good cause.”
