With another class ready to be enshrined into the Carter County Sports Hall of Fame on Saturday, June 20th, the second installment of the inductees will be introduced in today’s Elizabethton Star.
SHARON HUBBARD
Happy Valley basketball
Suiting up from 1977-78 through 1979-80, Hubbard held down a starting
job in all three of her seasons for the Lady Warriors.

She played her way onto the first two All-Watauga Conference teams,
attracting those honors in her junior and senior years.
The standout guard also ranked among Happy Valley’s top two scorers
both seasons as an upperclassman, when she helped transition the
program from the six-on-six, halfcourt game to five-on-five, full-court
basketball.

Additional honors included a place on the Elizabethton Star’s 1979-80
all-county squad.
ROBERT HEATON
Cloudland basketball/football
Heaton thrived over the course of his final two Highlander seasons on
the hardwood.

In 1952-53, he pitched in 318 points for a team-best 15.1 per-game
average recorded seven 20-point games and emerged an All-Watauga
Conference honoree.
The following year, as a senior, he scored at a 13-point clip, finished
with 387 points, accounted for five more 20-point showings, and was
named honorable mention All-Watauga.

Heaton was equally adept on the football field, evidenced by his
senior-year production.
An elusive, pass-catching end, he reeled in six touchdowns and four
extra points for a Cloudland-high 40 points in an eight-game season.
An all-conference performer, he starred (2 TDs, 1 PAT) in a 33-0 rout
of Hampton.

DENNIS GREENWELL
Milligan/Cloudland basketball
After a season at East Tennessee State, Greenwell became a three-time
All-Smoky Mountain Conference performer for Milligan.
Twice named to the Volunteer State Athletic Conference all-tournament
squad, the 5-foot-11 guard out of Lamar ended his Buffs career with
1,047 points.

After graduating from Milligan in 1957, Greenwell served as head
basketball coach and assistant football coach at Cloudland until 1966.

He eventually turned around a struggling hoops program, leading the
Highlanders to their first Watauga Conference and district tournament
championships in the 1964-65 season — which yielded the best record
(30-4) in school history.

The following year, his last before heading to Science Hill, saw
Greenwell guide Cloudland to a 29-8 record and its first state tournament.

SONNY HALE
Elizabethton High football
Among the most celebrated athletes in Elizabethton High history, Hale is
believed to be the only Northeast Tennessee player to twice make the
All-Southern football team.

Gaining that prestigious honor in his junior and senior seasons
(1944-45), Hale was a unanimous selection the second time around.
As a senior, he put up 27 touchdowns (25 rushing) and soared past the
1,000-yard rushing mark.

For his career, the halfback/kick returner produced 40 touchdowns,
scored 249 points, and passed for five TDs.
Hale was twice voted All-State, All-East Tennessee and All-Big Five
Conference before going on to become a starting halfback for
Milligan College.

HERB ARNETT
Happy Valley basketball
Arnett’s four-year varsity playing career at Happy Valley came to a
close in 1949, yet he remains one of the most prolific scorers in school
history with better than 1,400 points.

The Warriors’ No. 2 scorer on their 1947 and ’48 state tournament teams,
he spearheaded the team in that category as a senior.
Arnett was a three-time all-district and all-regional honoree — he was
named the most valuable player of both tournaments in his final season —
plus he gained a spot on the state’s 1948 all-tournament list.

After high school, Arnett played for a powerhouse Naval team (USS
Oriskany CV-34).
He later officiated local TSSAA basketball games.
