ELIZABETHTON – It started out as a beautiful day for baseball Tuesday evening at Northeast Community Credit Union Ballpark as the Northeast Tennessee Baseball league continued for teams around the area.
The Bulldogs, a Carter county team, were still searching for their first win in the league Tuesday against the Volunteers of Hawkins County.
It was a quiet first inning as the Volunteers were able to put a man in scoring position but came up empty-handed, while in the bottom of the frame the Bulldogs struggled to get on base.
The second inning, however, is when the Bulldogs came to life.
Collin Morgan and Morgan Lyons recorded the first two hits for their team and gave the Bulldogs an opportunity to take the lead early. However, an impressive pitching performance by the Volunteers’ man on the mound, Ethan Smith, shut the door quickly.
The Volunteers decided to flip the script in the third after Tucker Bellamy gave his team a 2-0 lead in the form of Sam Britton and Justin Reed.
In the bottom of the frame, the Bulldogs were able to even the score as Weston Street, Caleb Royston, and Collin Morgan each brought home a run to give their team a 3-2 lead heading into the fourth inning.
After the Bulldogs held their ground in the top of the fourth, allowing no runs to score, disaster struck.
A usual occurrence these past few weeks for the area, rain clouds began to form and along with lightning and thunder beginning to take place over the stadium.
After waiting for several minutes after the lightning delay was issued, the field became unplayable, halting the game at hand as well as the second game of the night between the Hilltoppers and the Wahoos.
As a result, the game was counted official and the Bulldogs claimed their first win in the Northeast Tennessee Baseball League over the Volunteers by a score of 3-2.
After celebrating tonight’s win, the Bulldogs will be back in action next Tuesday once again at Northeast Community Credit Union Ballpark as they take on the Cyclones.
