JOHNSON CITY— The first week of medical school looked much different for the 72 new members of the class of 2024, who were welcomed to East Tennessee State University’s Quillen College of Medicine this week.
Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the students participated in a virtual orientation via Zoom on Monday, July 13, and began classes online the next day. The traditional white coat ceremony that is usually held during the first week of medical school will be rescheduled to a later date when it is safe to gather.
Here is a look at the Class of 2024, by the numbers:
- Quillen received 2,433 applications and conducted a record 318 interviews for the 72 open spots.
- More than 10% of the class of 2024 are veterans, and several students plan to go back into military service or are committed to serving veterans at the VA through Veterans Healing Veterans Medical Access and Scholarship Program. Quillen is one of just 11 medical schools in the country that offer this program.
- Continuing Quillen’s mission to improve the health care in Northeast Tennessee and the surrounding region, 65 students are qualified as Tennesseans, with more than 10% coming from West Tennessee. Seven students come from the surrounding Appalachian region.
- The class of 2024 is diverse with 10 ethnic minorities and 41 different undergraduate schools represented. ETSU was the largest contributor to the new class, followed by the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.
- The class has 38 females and 34 males.
- In this class, 13 students elected to pursue the dual Doctor of Medicine and Master of Public Health (M.D./M.P.H.) program with the ETSU College of Public Health.
