MEMPHIS (AP) — One person died and a child is missing after the two went underwater near a boat ramp on the Mississippi River, officials in Tennessee said Saturday.
A body was recovered, and the search for the child was expected to continue though the night at the Shelby Forest boat ramp near Memphis, the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office said.
Lt. Anthony Buckner, a sheriff’s office spokesperson, said the pair were swimming without a life vest.
Buckner urged the public to practice water safety, noting that the sheriff’s office is looking for ways to discourage people from getting in the river.
This is at least the second drowning incident in a week in the Shelby Forest area. The sheriff’s office said last Saturday that a body was recovered near the Meeman-Shelby Forest State Park boat ramp after a person reportedly went underwater while fishing.
