T.A. Dugger Jr. Lady Cyclone volleyball head coach Kendall Ivester has instilled one thing into her girl’s heads since she took over as the head coach and it is a simple key to victory – make your three hits and force the other team to execute on their side of the net.
In Monday’s opener against Robinson, the Jr. Lady Cyclones managed to push the envelope forcing the home team from Kingsport into a third set and reaching 10 first before Robinson but failing to execute for five more points to win the match.
That wasn’t the case on Tuesday at T.A. Dugger Middle School gym as Ivester’s team came out with a vengeance to quickly dissect the Vance Jr. High Jr. Lady Vikings in taking a straight-set win to secure the match.
In the opening set, the Jr. Lady Cyclones were firing on all cylinders getting great serves over the net, digging the ball out defensively, and then putting the ball into the areas on Vance’s side of the floor where they could capitalize on points.
The Jr. Lady Cyclones put on a show for their fans to take set one by a 25-15 score.
Losing a little focus between sets, the Jr. Lady Cyclones found themselves behind 7-2 quickly in the second set before Ivester called a timeout and had a little heart to heart with her team.
The message was received as the team returned to the floor and quickly erased the deficit to quickly seize the lead and then closed out the match with authority winning in set two by a 25-17 score.
“Tonight when we came into play that was my thing was to shake off your mistakes,” said Ivester. “They played great and I am proud of them.
“I told them to play their game and keep their head up in that second game and they played their game to beat them.
Ivester said that she tries to emphasize the importance of following through with the three hits and focus on passing, then great things will be coming this year for her team.
“If we do our three hits and pass it, I think that we will be able to win several games this year,” Ivester stated.
“Zoe Proffitt, her serving helped us so much tonight. Jocelin Julian is our setter and she handled every ball and Zyleigh Bates passed wonderfully tonight. I think passing and serving are two of our key components to be successful in the season.”
With the win, the Jr. Lady Cyclones now stand at 1-1 on the young season.
