Heather Grindstaff is the latest recipient of the Elizabethton Lions Club’s student of the year scholarship.
Grindstaff, who has been awarded $500, is a senior at Hampton High School.
The scholarship program was started three years ago. The program involves guidance counselors or teachers from each of the county schools nominating a student of the month, as well as students who are selected as students of the month writing an essay on the importance of community involvement.
“Our goal at the Lions Club is community involvement, helping those without, those with vision issues, etc.,” explained Nathaneal Hughes, president of the club.
The winner of the scholarship is then selected based on the essay.
Grindstaff was ecstatic at the news of her winning the scholarship.
 “I’m so excited,” she exclaimed.
Grindstaff described anxiously waiting to hear back about if she had won. This was the first scholarship she applied for.
Daniel Arnett, a teacher at the high school, called Grindstaff several days ago and hinted at the news she had been waiting for. He called and asked if she could be at the school on Thursday, and finally shared the news.
“I was so excited, I’m still so excited,” said Grindstaff.
The Hampton High School senior described her involvement through school in helping the community.
This included: involvement in the development of an EMS/Fire Station in Little Milligan; involvement in construction and layout design of the Roan Mountain Landfill Tenant Building; and participating in purchasing, packaging and delivering of Christmas gifts for select elementary school students for two consecutive years.
Although not mentioned in the essay due to submitting prior, Grindstaff was also involved in helping measure and assisting in the drafting of the Stateline Drive-In for Carter County’s Class of 2020’s graduation ceremony.
Grindstaff is also involved in a wide variety of clubs, ranging from the National Honor Society to the Technology Student Association.
She also participates in multiple extracurricular activities, like ETSU’s Upward Bound Program, as well.
After high school, she said she hopes to attend the University of Tennessee-Knoxville to study Engineering as an undergraduate before going on to law school to become a patent attorney.
