With COVID impacting the Hardee’s Classic girls basketball tournament, the Elizabethton Lady Cyclones found themselves having to play a fill-in team as Daniel Boone had been the originally scheduled team Elizabethton was to tip-off against.

Instead, the Lady Cyclones lined up opposite the tournament hosts JV squad as the Lady Cyclones had little problem in dispatching the Crockett Lady Pioneer JV team 57-17 to advance to Wednesday’s 6 pm winner’s bracket contest.

Allowing only 10 points in the first half defensively, the Lady Cyclones found a balanced offense to take a 29-10 lead to the intermission.

Renna Lane had the hot hand for Coach Lucas Andrews team as she tickled the cotton for 12 first-half points including two treys. Morgan Headrick added seven points and Lina Lyon had six to help set the pace for the Lady Cyclones in the half.

Marlee Mathena and Reiley Whitson collected two points as well in the opening 16 minutes of action.

The third period was the most competitive of the game as Elizabethton managed to win the period 14-11 behind a trey from Lane, Olivia Holly’s three points, and two each from Lyon, Headrick, Whitson, and Maddie Fowler.

Crockett fizzled out after that as they were blanked in the final period while the Lady Cyclones added 14 more to their tally to take the big win.

Lane finished with 15 points, Lyon 14, and Headrick 11 as three Lady Cyclones reached double figures in the game.

Other Elizabethton players who contributed included Mathena with six points, Holly with five, Whitson with four, and Fowler’s two points.

Crockett was paced by Kadence Fannon who scored six points and Hailey Wilson with four.

The Lady Cyclones take the court again Wednesday at 6 pm.
