HAMPTON – The Hampton JV Bulldogs were pumped and ready to run some steers and unfortunately for the Longhorns of Johnson County, they were the herd the ‘Dogs had before them on the hardwood at VanHuss-White Gym.
And boy did they run as Hampton’s swarming defense on the full-court press created havoc for the ‘Horns forcing frustration and turnovers leading to a convincing 69-35 win.
The first quarter was competitive between the teams as Hampton jumped out front 19-14 at the first stop.
Dalton Holtsclaw and Logan Whitehead paced the home team with six points each in the open stanza. Dylan Trivett knocked down a trey while Ty McElyea and Cadon Buckles dropped in a deuce apiece.
The defense really turned it up a notch in the second quarter as Hampton bolted out to a 27-6 quarter to push their advantage to 46-21 at the break.
Austin Bentley was sizzling from the outside in the period hitting two treys and scoring eight in the frame. Buckles totaled six as well to lead the onslaught.
Holtsclaw, McElyea, and Whitehead played string music to the tune of three points each with Michael Anspaugh and Brody Hicks recording two points each as well.
The third quarter was much like how the game started as both teams once again were going head to head with the ‘Dogs pulling out the quarter 17-10 to lead 63-31 heading into the fourth quarter.
With the offense falling off drastically in the fourth quarter, Hampton squeaked by in the final eight minutes 6-5.
Whitehead led the ‘Dogs in the contest with a team-high 13 points followed closely by Bentley with 12. Holtsclaw and Buckles registered nine points each.
McElyea finished with five points with the remaining points being collected by Trivett (3), Luke Anspaugh (4), Levi Lyons (3), Michael Anspaugh (2), Chance Point (2), Geno Carrico (2), and Hicks (3).
Dalton Robinson led the Longhorn charge with 10 points in the game. Graham Reece and Connor Simcox logged six points apiece as well for the ‘Horns.
