The Elizabethton Board of Education will be meeting in their regularly-scheduled December meeting on Thursday, December 17, 2020 at 6:30 pm in the Mack Pierce Board Room at the Central Office located at 804 South Watauga Avenue in Elizabethton.

It will be the first meeting since newly elected members Michael Wilson and Jamie Bass Schaff have been sworn in after winning seats in the November elections. Former Board Chairwoman Rita Booher and Dr. Grover May elected not to seek re-election in 2020.

With that in mind, the first piece of business will be to elect a board chair and vice-chair before the meeting proceeds.

The chair and vice-chair will serve a two-year term or until a successor is named.

By rule, if no officer of the Board is serving at the time of the organizational meeting, any member shall call the meeting to order and preside until a chair is elected as the first order of business.

If the office of chairman is vacated prior to the expiration of the annual term, the vice-chair shall assume all the responsibilities of the chair until a new chair is elected.

At the completion of this election, the board’s agenda will move to the approval of the consent and regular agenda.

A time of special recognition will follow as the 2020-2021 Elizabethton City Schools System-Level Teachers of the Year and Building-Level Teachers of the Year will be celebrated.

The following will be recognized:
Pre-K-4: Amy Cole
Grades 5-8 and Special Areas: Brandi McCloud
Grades 9-12: Jason Clevinger

East Side Elementary School: Sara Dunford and Nicole Horne.
Harold McCormick Elementary School: Amy Cole and Emilee Whitehead.
West Side Elementary School: Lindsey Mussard and Laura Blevins.

Citizens that have requested to speak to the board will have their opportunity following the teacher recognitions.

Director of Schools Mr. Richard VanHuss will present his Director’s report followed by any board reports and the Student Liaison report.

During the regular agenda, board members will take into advisement the first reading of seven items of revised board policies.

Among those items looking to be revised are the following:

A. Board Policy 1.901(1) Charter School Applications, with markups.
B. Board Policy 6.303(2) Interrogations and Searches, with markups.
