The opening and closing games of the 13th Annual Mickey Forrester JV Basketball Classic played at Treadway gym on Tuesday morning were not close as Unaka took Tennessee High 50-24 and in the nightcap Volunteer garnered a 41-23 win over EHS.
Game One
Unaka 50, Tennessee High 24
Sophomore Lyndie Ramsey scored a game-high 16 points as Unaka dropped the JV Lady Vikings. The Rangers owned a 13-2 first period advantage that swelled to 25-10 by halftime. Unaka took a 30-17 lead into the final period.
Mallory Guy added 10 points to Ramsey’s effort and Macy Ensor scored eight for the Rangers. Mac Newport led the way for THS with seven points while Anna Cate added six.
Game Two
Cloudland 41, Dobyns-Bennett 38
The Lady Highlanders trailed 22-19 at the half but battled back in the second half outscoring the Lady Indians 22-16 in the second half. Saharra McKinney led all scorers with 16 points for Cloudland who advance to play Unaka on Wednesday at 6 pm in the semi-finals.
“We made free throws down the stretch and that’s what you have to do to win games,” Lady ‘Landers head coach Matt Birchfield said. “We went up by seven and relaxed on defense and they hit three threes in a row. But we gathered ourselves and made our free throws and did a good job handling the ball down the stretch.”
Kara Fields knocked down a big trey in the third period as Cloudland made it a 30-26 game going into the final stanza.
Allison Salyer connected on a three-ball to open the fourth quarter but the ‘Landers ran off seven straight points for a 37-29 lead, but the Tribe had a rally left in them.
Kadence Block hit a pair of three’s consecutively to make it a 37-35 contest with 3:04 left in regulation but McKinney hit two free throws and Fields followed with two more for a 41-35 lead before Jodyn Lawson hit for a trey to close the gap.
Jodyn Lawson was the top scorer for D-B with 11 points followed by Hannah Frye with six.
Game Three
Hampton 49, David Crockett 48
This one saw three lead changes in the fourth period but a trey from Ryleigh Nickles put the Lady Bulldogs ahead 49-46 and they would never relinquish that lead. Hampton led 17-12 after one period and extended to a 29-21 halftime advantage.
Crockett closed the gap to 42-37 going into the fourth period and tied the score on a trey from Kaylee Tester and a deuce from Sophia Gouge.
Madi McClain answered with a deuce and Kadence Famon knotted the score again with a putback bucket.
Rylie Mclain gave Hampton the lead once again with a deuce but Kylie Coggins got the Lady Pioneers back to even as the score stood 46-46 with 39.2 ticks left in regulation.
Nickles then drained her three-pointer and the best Crockett could do was a pair of free throws from Coggins as Hampton ran out the clock.
Madi McClain led Hampton with 15 points with Maci Henry adding 10. For Crockett, Coggins had 15 with Fanon and Tester each scoring eight.
Game Four
