Local Milligan University student, Chase McGlamery, presented the Johnson County Community Center with a $1,000 donation in support of their after-school program on Thursday, Jan. 4. McGlamery presented the check on behalf of Heritage Hall Theatre, a local non-profit formed in 2005.
The donation comes in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic and after the Johnson County Community Center lost a significant grant from the Lottery for Education: Afterschool Programs (LEAPs). “While our theatre has been closed for nearly a year due to the COVID pandemic, myself and the entire board of directors felt it was vital to support our local kids and our entire community,” said McGlamery. “This past year, our theatre has faced several challenges related to the ongoing health crisis, but I am grateful that one of my first actions since stepping in as president this year was to support our community in this way.”
The Johnson County Community Center is open every day after school and provides any student with a safe place to work on homework, play games, and enjoy snacks, among other things. Since losing the LEAPs grant, the center now primarily relies on donations and support from community members.
In addition to stepping into the role of President of Heritage Hall Theatre this year, McGlamery continues to make an impact across our community. McGlamery is currently finishing his undergraduate degree at Milligan University, where he serves as a resident assistant, executive cabinet member for the Student Government Association, and interns with the Milligan PR department. In addition to his work at Milligan and volunteering with various non-profits, McGlamery also serves as the district communication liaison for Johnson County Schools.
“I am thankful for all the support I personally received from this community when I was in elementary and high school,” said McGlamery. “Being able to give back and now lead community organizations is one of the greatest gifts I’ve received.”
