Kathryn Sue Benfield Birchfield, 79, Elizabethton, passed away Wednesday, February 17, 2021, at Sycamore Shoals Hospital.
She was born October 18, 1941 in Johnson City to the late Roosevelt and Blanche Ashley Benfield.
Sue was a 1959 graduate of Science Hill High School. She had worked at Free Service Tire Store and as a secretary to an attorney for several years. In later years she was a homemaker.
Sue was of the Freewill Baptist Faith. She was an avid Bingo player and a member of the VFW Auxiliary.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Hobart Birchfield, who passed away April 22, 2018; a daughter, Tina Pippin; two sons, Todd Pippin and Timothy Pippin; the father of her children, Jack Pippin; and three sisters, Mary Bennett, Jean Adams and Pat Alexander.
Survivors include her children, Terri Phipps and (Ron Oliver) Bristol, Tenn., Tammie (Mike) Cole and Ted Pippin, all of Elizabethton; 11 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
The graveside service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Monday, February 22, at Mountain Home National Cemetery (Historic Section) with Pastor Ben Cole officiating. Pallbearers will be selected from family and friends. The family will receive friends from 4 until 5 p.m. Sunday, February 21, at the funeral home. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, everyone is required to wear a mask and practice social distancing. Family and friends will assemble at the cemetery at 12:45 p.m. Monday.
