Lady Rangers win District 1-A consolation over Hampton

For the third time this season, the Unaka Lady Rangers defeated
the Hampton Bulldogs this time for third place in the District 1-A
tournament.
Sophomore Lyndie Ramsey was simply unstoppable. Ramsey grabbed
double-digit rebounds and scoring 35 points to lead Unaka to a 62-44 win.
Coach Buddy Hazelwoods Lady Bulldogs came into Snavely-Ensor gym
with an upset in mind and outscored Unaka 12-9 in the first.
Hampton held as much as a nine-point lead early in the game. With 51
seconds to go in the first period the scoreboard read Hampton 12 and Unaka
three, but in the final 45 seconds Ramsey scored six points to bring the
Lady Rangers within three.
Hampton would push out to an 18-11 lead in the second before Ramsey
went to work.
With 1:14 to play before the half Unaka went on a 13 point run and took a
24-18 lead.
The Lady Rangers went up by three, 24-21 at the half.
Hampton pulled within one, 26-25, in the third before the Lady
Rangers began to put the game away.
Ramsey scored nine in the quarter while Tara Whitehead stole the ball
twice and would score four.
Kiki Forney added five, one a long three from the corner while Natalie Stout
and Macy Ensor each scored a basket.
The Lady Rangers pulled out to a 46-31 lead after three.
Unaka led by as many as 18 in the final period and went on to win 62-44
taking third place.
“We got beat by a better team,” Coach Hazelwood stated.
Hampton was led by Taylor Berry with 11 points, Macy Henry scored nine,
Linsey Jenkins followed with eight and Madison McClain scored seven.
Madi McClain and Linsey Jenkins were selected All-Tournament, while Macy Ensor
and Tara Whitehead of Unaka made the team.
Lyndie Ramsey was selected Co-Player of the Year in District 1-A.
Unaka will play at Greenback in the Regional and Hampton will travel to
Cosby.
