Virtual Event in Leiper’s Fork Also Launched Statewide Trashercise Campaign
MEMPHIS — Keep Tennessee Beautiful celebrated March as Keep Tennessee Beautiful Month and today honored Carter County’s Ed Jordan with the Love Where You Live Award. The award was presented to Jordan during KTnB’s virtual event via Zoom by Executive Director Missy Marshall. Jordan serves on the front lines of the cleanup of his home county as head of Keep Carter County Beautiful.

Joined by a hard-working group of volunteers first known as Carter County Proud, Jordan led the effort to become Keep Carter County Beautiful, a part of Keep Tennessee Beautiful and Keep America Beautiful. Cleanup projects over the years have included litter and debris pick-up along Carter County’s roadways and clean up and beautification of the popular Tweetsie Trail, among many other projects. Keep Carter County Beautiful has close ties with the Carter County School System, which supports his efforts in providing anti-litter education.

“Ed Jordan is one of the most dedicated volunteers we have, and that’s saying a lot coming from the Volunteer State,” Marshall said. “He sets the bar high for Keep Tennessee Beautiful volunteers, as an inspiration to us all.” Marshall will travel to Carter County on March 27 for an in-person award presentation to Jordan.

Keep Tennessee Beautiful’s Love Where You Live Award, now in its sixth year, recognizes individuals who have made a positive difference in the litter clean up and beautification of their communities.

In addition to the award presentation, KTnB launched Trashercise, a statewide roadway clean-up campaign meant to inspire communities and individuals into action. Designed to rally everyday citizens, Trashercise encourages litter pick-up while promoting the exercise benefits of the activity.

Litter is an enormous burden to the state both financially and ecologically, costing the state more than fifteen million dollars annually. In order to end littering, behavioral changes and public awareness are an absolute necessity.

Keep Tennessee Beautiful is the state level affiliate of Keep America Beautiful and serves as a state resource for litter prevention, community greening, and recycling & waste reduction education. The Keep America Beautiful Great American Cleanup takes place nation-wide March 20-June 20, 2021.

Keep Tennessee Beautiful is housed by the University of Memphis as an independent department within the College of Professional & Liberal Studies as a community engagement program. Keep Tennessee Beautiful is a grant-funded organization sponsored by the Tennessee Department of Transportation.
