At Roan Mountain, we house, care for, and educate the public on a variety of native animals. We work under an educational permit from TWRA. Currently, we care for three birds of prey and several snakes! As you can imagine, caring for these animals is costly, as their food and health care are a specialty!
All of our animals are non-releasable for a variety of reasons. We frequently program with these animals and never charge for educational programs when using them. Here is your opportunity to support our educational wildlife program and help us care for these animals! 
All donations will go to purchase food, pay vet bills, purchase gloves, tethers, falconry equipment, aquarium bedding, and to improve and build more housing facilities for our non-releasable birds of prey.

Saturday, March 20 
Beginner’s Photography Hike – Wildflowers and Nature – 2 p.m. – 4 p.m. – Meet at Campground Picnic Shelter. Price is $5.00. Register for event. Have an interest in getting into nature photography?  Join Roan Mountain State Park Ranger Phil Hylen on Saturday, March 20 from 2-4PM for an introductory nature photography hike featuring the early spring wildflowers of Roan Mountain, the Doe River, and any wildlife opportunities that present themselves.  Participants will learn the basics of photography and become more comfortable with their cameras as we hike 1 mile along the Riverside and Tom Gray Trails.  
Registration is limited to 10 people with a registration fee of $5.00 per person.  Guests will meet Ranger Phil at the Campground Picnic Shelter Parking Lot to begin.  Be sure to bring your camera and good hiking clothes.

Sunday, March 21
Irish Traditional Music Session – 1 p.m. – 4 p.m. – Price is Free. Meet at Contact Program Leader. An Irish session is an informal gathering of musicians who play Irish Traditional Music. It’s like a music jam, but with a set repertoire of tunes and a very specific style. Experienced Irish Traditional Musicians (melody instruments only) are welcome to join. 
Due to COVID-19, CDC recommendations for gatherings apply, inlcuding group size limitations, social distancing and mask wearing. Program is limited to 10 participants at this time and advance registration is required. We look forward to welcoming listeners in the future, but at this time only musicians may register.

Saturday, March 27
Fiddle for the Absolute Beginner – 9 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. – Price is $25.00. Meet at Contact Instructor for details. Register for event.
Workshop participants will learn the basics of playing the fiddle, including instrument care, tuning, posture, bow hold, fingering, scales, active listening, learning by ear, and more. No matter what kind of fiddle music you’re interested in, the fundamentals are the same!
No previous experience is required. All you need is a playable fiddle, a recording device, and a desire to learn. If you’d like some advice on finding a starter fiddle, contact the instructor. This workshop is aimed at the adult learner’s attention span, but teenagers 15 and older are welcome.
The workshop will be taught by Park Ranger Marcianne O’Day. Marcianne learned to fiddle from her grandfather, starting at the age of seven. She has a minor in Bluegrass, Old-Time, and Country Music from ETSU, was a founding member of the ETSU Celtic Band, has toured Scotland and Ireland, and has been teaching for over ten years. She performs across the Southeast with Irish Traditional Band Sigean and enjoys traditional music in many forms.

Fly-tying for Beginners – 2 p.m. – 4 p.m. Meet at Visitor Center Porch. Price is $20.00. Register for event.
Fly-tying is the perfect blend of art and science.  A little practice with this craft will make fishing mountain streams a true joy.  Join Roan Mountain State Park Ranger Phil Hylen for a beginner’s fly-tying class on Saturday, March 27th from 2-4PM at the Roan Mountain State Park Visitor Center.  Participants will learn how to read a stream’s or river’s food supply with a brief river-side insect hunt in the Doe River.  Afterwards, a class-room portion will introduce the basics of fly tying and guide you through making your very first fly!

Hike with Ranger Holland as we explore the natural nocturnal world of Roan Mountain State Park. Hike will be moderate in difficulty and last 1.5 hours.
Dress in layers for the weather, with sturdy footwear, and bring a bottle of water.
