Despite the immense thunder and hail storms of this previous weekend, high school baseball was still on in Carter County as the Elizabethton Cyclones played host to the Rebels of Sullivan South at Northeast Community Credit Union Ballpark Monday evening.

The early stages of the game would be best classified as a defensive battle, with the first three innings being highlighted by the Cyclones’ man on the mound Ashton Wilson, who had not allowed a hit up to that point.

The third inning would also see the beginning of Elizabethton’s performance, as after two shutout innings, Bryson Rollins would bring home one run in the form of Cade Russell with a single to left field.

Soon after, it would be Jaden Anderson coming around to score due to an errant throw from South’s starter, Jackson Dean, to give the Cyclones an early 2-0 lead.

Wilson’s dominant performance on the bump would carry over into the top of the fourth inning where he would yet again sit the Rebels down in order.

In the home half of the fourth inning, Anderson would help add another run to Elizabethton’s total by shooting a ball into the left-center gap, a hit that would be duplicated by Rollins in the next at-bat to increase the home advantage to 4-0 heading into the fifth.

And after four-and-one-third of an inning, the Rebels would finally record their first hit of the contest, a blooper to shallow left field. But it would be all for naught, as Wilson would get out of the inning unscathed.

Continuing the trend from the previous innings the Cyclones added two more runs in the fifth with a well-hit ball by Gage Treadway to the right-field wall that would bring home one followed by a ground out in the next at-bat that added another to make it a 6-0 ball game after five.

Rollins would bring home his third RBI of the night in the sixth inning with a line drive to the right-center field gap to increase the lead by one more, followed by an RBI single to centerfield by Cooper Tipton to bring home another and a ground out by Elijah Birdsong that scored one more.

After Wilson walked to load the bases in the next at-bat, Russell ended the game early by means of run-rule with a single to center, giving the Cyclones the official win, 10-0.

Elizabethton will be back in action at home on Thursday as they welcome the Tri-Cities Flames.
