HAMPTON – On a cold, blustery day that was more appropriate for Eskimos and polar bears, the Hampton Lady Bulldogs were hoping to break out of a deep chill they have experienced since the start of the season and pick up their first win.

However, with a few snow flurries flying the Lady Bucs of University High used their hot bats to deal Hampton yet another loss by a 12-4 score.

The Lady Bulldogs actually drew first blood in the bottom of the first inning when Sophia Cable walked to lead off the inning. Makayla Maslin followed with a single putting Lady ‘Dog runners on first and second.

A Sara Orr groundout allowed Cable to score.

University High, however, quickly responded with two in the top of the second and three in the top of the third to make it a 5-1 Lady Buc lead.

Hampton managed to get one of the runs back in the bottom of the third when pitcher Cheyenne Fair led off with a single. Fair advanced to third base on a groundout by Maslin.

An Orr single plated Fair to make the score 5-2 heading into the top of the fourth inning.

From that point, it was all U-H as the Lady Bucs scored one in the top of the fourth, one in the sixth, and five in the top of the seventh.

Hampton did manage to add a couple more runs in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Fair and Cable led off with back-to-back walks to get the inning going. Both runners advanced a base on a Maslin ground out.

Fair stole home to make it a 12-3 game and a sacrifice fly by Orr brought Cable home to give the final 12-4 score.

“We start to look like a team and then about midway through we fall apart,” said Hampton head coach Chelsey Weddle who saw bright glimpses of what the program can be as her team made some solid plays on defense and collected eight hits in the contest.

Maslin had two hits to lead the Lady Bulldogs with Cable, Orr, Macy Henry, Lacey Smith, Abigail Willis, and Fair collecting one base hit each.

The Lady Bulldogs are scheduled to play at Tennessee High on Tuesday at 4:30 pm.
